History:
Since entering series production in 1964, the Porsche 911 has become one of the world’s best-known sports cars. With the Carrera RS 2.7, Porsche created a performance-focused variant, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 1972 for the 1973 model year. Developed as a road-legal homologation model, it provided the foundation for further racing versions of the 911. The letters “RS” stand for “Rennsport”, German for racing.
Its air-cooled 2.7-litre flat-six engine produced 210 PS (approximately 207 hp). Lightweight construction, chassis refinements and improved aerodynamics delivered outstanding performance. The distinctive “ducktail” rear spoiler reduced rear-axle lift at high speeds, while wider rear wheel arches and the prominent Carrera script along the sides gave the car its unmistakable appearance.
Porsche initially planned just 500 examples to meet racing homologation requirements. Demand proved so strong that production ultimately reached 1,580 cars. Customers could choose between the lightweight Sport version and the more comfortable Touring specification. Today, the Carrera RS 2.7 remains one of Porsche’s most celebrated classics and a forerunner of the RS models that followed.
