Historical background:
The Junkers Ju 52/3m, often affectionately known by its German nickname “Tante Ju”, is one of the best-known German multi-purpose aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s. Originally developed as a rugged airliner and cargo aircraft, it was instantly recognizable by its three-engine layout, fixed landing gear and distinctive corrugated metal skin. In military service, the Ju 52 was used primarily as a transport aircraft, carrying personnel, supplies, equipment and wounded soldiers.
The Ju 52/3m g4e was a transport-focused version of the type. It was powered by three BMW 132A radial engines and featured a strengthened cargo floor, along with enlarged loading hatches in the side of the fuselage and in the cabin roof. These modifications made it better suited for bulky cargo and military supply duties. Although not a fast aircraft, the Ju 52 remained in service for many years thanks to its reliability, ease of maintenance and good short-field performance.
