About the original:
The M24 Chaffee was developed during the Second World War as a replacement for the increasingly outdated M5 Stuart light tank. The U.S. Army required a fast and mobile vehicle for reconnaissance and support duties, but with considerably greater firepower. The M24 was therefore equipped with a 75mm gun mounted in a relatively low-profile turret and featured modern torsion-bar suspension, which improved its mobility and cross-country performance. Power was provided by two Cadillac engines.
The first M24s reached American units in Europe towards the end of 1944 and entered combat during the German Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944–45. Compared with the M5 Stuart, the Chaffee offered substantially greater firepower and could support infantry, engage lightly armoured vehicles and attack bunkers, buildings and other strongpoints. Its armour remained relatively light, however, and the tank was not intended to engage heavy German armour in direct combat.
During the final months of the Second World War, M24-equipped units took part in the Allied advance through Germany. Because of its late introduction, the Chaffee was unable to replace the M5 Stuart completely before the end of the conflict. A small number were also supplied to the British 7th Armoured Division, although these vehicles did not arrive until the spring of 1945. Despite its limited wartime service, the M24 proved to be a successful design and remained in use with numerous armed forces after 1945.
