About the original Hawkeye:

The Grumman E-2C Hawkeye is a legendary aircraft of the U.S. Navy, serving as a cornerstone of maritime air surveillance and tactical command for decades. First taking to the skies in 1960 as the E-2A prototype, it became the first carrier-based aircraft specifically designed for airborne early warning (AEW) duties and entered service in 1964.

Introduced in 1973, the E-2C variant brought major upgrades in radar capability, onboard computing, and communications systems. One of its most distinctive features is the large, rotating radar dome—measuring 24 feet (7.3 meters) in diameter—mounted above the fuselage. The integrated AN/APS-145 radar system allows the E-2C to track over 2,000 targets simultaneously and coordinate up to 40 air defense missions at once.

Powered by two Allison T56-A-427 turboprop engines generating 5,100 horsepower each, the aircraft reaches speeds of over 300 knots (around 550 km/h) and operates at altitudes of up to 30,000 feet (approximately 9,100 meters). The typical crew includes two pilots and three mission operators responsible for radar surveillance, communications, and tactical coordination.

The E-2C has proven itself in numerous military operations—from Cold War monitoring to Middle East deployments and humanitarian missions. In addition to the U.S. Navy, countries such as France, Japan, and Taiwan have also deployed the E-2C for their aerial surveillance needs.
