Historical Background
The Battle of Austerlitz, also known as the “Battle of the Three Emperors,” is regarded as Napoleon’s greatest victory and a masterpiece of military strategy. On December 2, 1805, near the Moravian town of Austerlitz, Napoleon’s Grande Armée faced the combined forces of Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Emperor Francis II of Austria. Following the success at Ulm, Austerlitz became the decisive turning point of the War of the Third Coalition. The battle is renowned for the precise execution of Napoleon’s plan: while the villages of Tellnitz and Sokolnitz saw fierce fighting, the assault on the Pratzen Heights ultimately decided the outcome.
