About the original:
The Jagdpanzer 38(t), better known as the “Hetzer”, was developed using the reliable and proven chassis of the Czechoslovak-designed Panzerkampfwagen 38(t). Its purpose was to provide the German Army with a compact and economical light tank destroyer. Its low silhouette, well-sloped frontal armour and 7.5cm gun mounted in a fully enclosed superstructure made it an effective anti-tank vehicle.
Ease of construction, limited production costs and the ability to manufacture the vehicle quickly in large numbers were important considerations during its development. The Jagdpanzer 38(t) entered military service in 1944 and was widely employed until the end of the Second World War.
The vehicle was particularly effective when operating from well-camouflaged defensive positions. Its low profile made it difficult to detect, while its 7.5cm gun was capable of engaging many Allied armoured vehicles. However, the cramped fighting compartment, restricted visibility and limited traverse of the main gun placed considerable demands on its four-man crew.
