Historical background:
The Lockheed L-1049G “Super Constellation” played a key role in the revival of German civil aviation after World War II. When the newly re-established Lufthansa resumed flight operations in 1955, the Super Constellation became one of the first long-haul aircraft in its fleet.
From 1956 onward, Lufthansa operated the L-1049G on intercontinental routes to North and South America as well as Africa. With its distinctive triple-tail design and four powerful radial engines, it symbolized comfort, range, and modern air travel in the 1950s. Depending on configuration, the aircraft accommodated approximately 60 to 90 passengers.
With the beginning of the jet age—particularly after the introduction of the Boeing 707 in the early 1960s—the Super Constellation was gradually phased out. Nevertheless, it remains one of Lufthansa’s most iconic historic aircraft and a symbol of Germany’s early postwar intercontinental air travel.
