History:
In 1975, British racing engineer Derek Gardner designed the P34 for the Tyrrell team, a car whose six-wheel layout made it one of the most remarkable experiments in Formula One in the 1970s. It ran on four small front tyres and two large rear tyres; the small front tyres were meant to reduce the frontal area and hence aerodynamic drag, while two additional front tyres, steered by a complex suspension, made up for the lost contact patch. After its race debut at the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix, the P34 proved competitive: Jody Scheckter finished second in the 1976 World Championship and Patrick Depailler fifth. In the 1977 season, the P34 contributed to Jody Scheckter's World Drivers' Championship before being replaced at the end of 1977 by the Tyrrell 008.
