Historical background:
The 28 cm railway gun “Leopold” was part of the German K5 series of heavy railway artillery used during the Second World War. Mounted on a specially designed rail carriage, it was capable of firing shells over long distances. “Leopold” was used in Italy in 1944 and became particularly known for its role during the fighting at Anzio, where Allied troops nicknamed it “Anzio Annie.” After the war, the gun was captured by U.S. forces and is preserved today at the Ordnance Training and Heritage Center at Fort Gregg-Adams.
