History:
The SEPECAT Jaguar originated in the 1960s as a joint project between the British Aircraft Corporation and French aircraft manufacturer Breguet. Initially intended as an advanced jet trainer with an additional ground-attack capability, the design evolved into a capable strike aircraft optimised for low-level operations. The first prototype made its maiden flight in September 1968.
The two-seat Jaguar T.2 provided conversion and continuation training for Jaguar pilots. Its tandem cockpit accommodated a pilot and instructor, allowing crews to practise demanding mission profiles, particularly high-speed flying at low altitude. Like the single-seat versions, it was powered by two Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour engines. From 1974, the trainers served with units including the Jaguar Conversion Team at RAF Lossiemouth, which subsequently became No. 226 Operational Conversion Unit.
The T.4 was developed by upgrading existing T.2 and T.2A aircraft with improved avionics to Jaguar 96 standard. Alongside dedicated conversion training, the two-seaters also served with operational squadrons to support ongoing instruction and maintain pilot proficiency. They supported the Royal Air Force’s Jaguar operations for more than three decades, until the type was withdrawn from RAF flying service in 2007.
