Historical Background:
The Lancia Delta HF Integrale is one of the great icons of the World Rally Championship. Developed from the road-going Delta HF 4WD, Lancia created an exceptionally successful Group A rally car that shaped the WRC from the late 1980s onwards. The Delta Integrale in particular cemented the legendary reputation of the brand: with its all-wheel drive, turbocharged engine and robust engineering, it was competitive on asphalt, gravel and snow alike, playing a key role in Lancia’s remarkable run of success in the World Rally Championship.
The Safari Rally in Kenya was a very special challenge. First held in 1953, the event was long regarded as one of the toughest rallies in the world. Extreme heat, dust, mud, long-distance stages and demanding rough roads pushed both crews and machines to their limits. For this event, the Delta Integrale rally cars were specially adapted: reinforced suspension components, heavy-duty shock absorbers, increased ride height, protective bars, additional headlights and further protective parts turned the compact rally car into a true Safari special.
At the 1991 Safari Rally, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V once again demonstrated its outstanding qualities. Juha Kankkunen and Juha Piironen won the rally in the Martini Lancia works car carrying start number 6. Jorge Recalde and Martin Christie finished third in another Delta Integrale 16V, while Miki Biasion and Tiziano Siviero retired from the event. The victory in Kenya was not only another highlight in the history of the Delta Integrale, but also an important step on Lancia’s way to winning the 1991 World Rally Championship.
The Lancia Delta HF Safari therefore represents a particularly fascinating version of the successful Group A rally car: technically prepared without compromise, visually distinctive and closely linked to one of the toughest events in international rallying.
