History:
The Heinkel He 111 P-1 was one of the early production versions of one of Germany’s best-known bomber aircraft of the Second World War. Originally developed during the 1930s as a fast passenger and multi-purpose aircraft, the He 111 had also been designed with possible military use in mind. Its aerodynamic shape, all-metal construction and retractable landing gear made it a modern aircraft for its time. It later became one of the Luftwaffe’s principal medium bombers alongside the Junkers Ju 88.

Introduced in 1939, the P-series differed significantly from the earlier versions. Its most distinctive feature was the newly designed, fully glazed and asymmetrical nose, which replaced the stepped cockpit of previous variants. The He 111 P-1 was powered by two liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines, giving the aircraft a strong performance by the standards of the period. The extensive nose glazing established the characteristic appearance that is now most commonly associated with the Heinkel He 111.

Aircraft of the P-series were used during the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and in the early campaigns in Western Europe. Together with the Dornier Do 17, the He 111 initially formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s bomber force. However, its relatively light defensive armament and the increasing performance of opposing fighter aircraft soon revealed the limitations of the design. The He 111 proved particularly vulnerable when operating on daylight bombing missions.

Production of the P-series remained relatively limited. As the powerful DB 601 engines were urgently required for fighter aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Bf 110, production increasingly shifted to the He 111 H-series powered by Junkers Jumo engines. Nevertheless, the He 111 P-1 represented an important stage in the aircraft’s development, introducing the unmistakable glazed nose and distinctive silhouette that made the Heinkel He 111 one of the most recognisable aircraft of the early war years.
