Historical background:
The 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion was the first German unit to field the new Panzer VI “Tiger I” in combat. In the summer of 1942, the battalion received its first four tanks, soon deployed to the Leningrad sector on the Eastern Front.
On 16 September 1942, these Tigers saw their first action in swampy terrain against Soviet positions. While their powerful gun and armor proved formidable, early mechanical issues and engine failures were still common.
Despite these initial challenges, this engagement marked the beginning of the Tiger I’s legendary combat record. The 502nd Battalion would go on to become one of the most successful heavy tank units of the war, setting new standards in armored warfare.
