About the Fukuiraptor:
Fukuiraptor kitadaniensis was a medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur that lived approximately 120 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now Japan. Its fossils were discovered in the Kitadani Formation near Katsuyama in Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan’s most important dinosaur fossil sites.
The species was formally described in 2000. Its name can be translated as “predator from Fukui”, while the species name refers to the Kitadani locality. Fukuiraptor was the first carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Japan to be scientifically named as a distinct species.
The known specimen measured approximately 4 to 5 metres in length but was probably not yet fully grown. Fukuiraptor walked on two powerful hind legs and possessed a long tail, sharp teeth and unusually large, curved claws on its hands. These claws were probably used to seize and injure prey.
Today, Fukuiraptor is generally classified as a member of the Megaraptora, a group of predatory dinosaurs characterised by long forelimbs and exceptionally large hand claws. Its discovery provided important information about the dinosaurs of Japan and Early Cretaceous East Asia.
