About the Fukuisaurus:
Fukuisaurus tetoriensis was a medium-sized herbivorous dinosaur that lived approximately 120 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now Japan. Its fossils were discovered in the Kitadani Formation near Katsuyama in Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan’s most important dinosaur fossil sites.
The species was formally described in 2003. Its name can be translated as “lizard from Fukui”, while the species name refers to the Tetori Group, the geological formation group in which its remains were discovered. Fukuisaurus was also the first dinosaur discovered in Japan to have its entire skeleton reconstructed.
Fukuisaurus is believed to have reached a length of approximately 5.2 metres. It possessed a relatively stocky body, strong hind legs, a long tail and comparatively long forelimbs. Although primarily bipedal, it was probably capable of moving on all four legs when necessary. Its distinctive beak-like mouth was adapted for cropping vegetation, while its specialised cheek teeth allowed it to chew and process plant material.
Today, Fukuisaurus is classified as a member of the Iguanodontia, a group of herbivorous ornithopod dinosaurs. It shared its environment with other dinosaurs discovered in the Kitadani Formation, including the carnivorous Fukuiraptor, which may have preyed upon herbivores such as Fukuisaurus.
Together, these discoveries have provided valuable insights into the diverse dinosaur fauna of Japan and the ecosystems of Early Cretaceous East Asia.
