History:
The German field kitchen, commonly known among soldiers as the “Gulaschkanone” or “goulash cannon”, was an important part of military supply operations during the Second World War. Non-motorised formations such as infantry units depended on mobile kitchens to provide regular hot meals while on the march or operating near the front.

A typical field kitchen consisted of a front limber with a seat for the driver and storage space for ingredients and equipment, together with a separate cooking trailer carrying large kettles. Depending on the version, it could prepare meals for approximately 120 to 220 soldiers. The kitchen was usually pulled by a team of two to four horses, while towing by motor vehicles was comparatively uncommon.

The field kitchen received its popular nickname from its distinctive appearance. Its tall chimney and two-wheeled carriage resembled a piece of artillery when viewed from the side. In addition to soups and stews, it could be used to prepare hot drinks and other meals or to keep food warm during transportation.

Although rarely given much attention in accounts of military history, field kitchens were essential to the effectiveness and morale of troops in the field. The “Gulaschkanone” consequently became a characteristic companion of German infantry formations and a symbol of everyday military supply operations.
