Historical background:
The 5 cm Pak 38, developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig and introduced in 1940, replaced the lighter 3.7 cm Pak. With its long L/60 barrel, it was an effective anti-tank gun during the early war years, later gradually replaced by heavier weapons such as the 7.5 cm Pak 40 but still used until the end of the war.
